POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Sports & Recreation and the PLAY Coordinator - PLAY Coaches are responsible for the development, instruction, and motivation of all students participating in PLAY physical education classes at their assigned school site(s). PLAY coaches will instruct group physical education classes ranging from beginner to intermediate-advanced level in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes student wellness and engagement. The PLAY coach is responsible for leading our PLAY classes, and teaching the specific skills affiliated with each particular class design, while maintaining the health and safety of each class participant as well as adhering to the specific school policies within their assigned school site.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION: Must be 18 years or older. Kinesiology or education track or background preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: Current First Aid & CPR (Adult & Child) certificate. All relevant PLAY and new employee trainings as required at time of hire.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values; strong communication skills; ability to motivate and educate students in all areas of physical fitness, sports & recreation.
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: Experience working with K-5 students; coaching team sports or individuals; familiarity with team and individual sports rules, fundamentals, and safety protocols. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Create an energetic and welcoming age-appropriate environment by greeting students, teachers, and administrators by name with a smile and eye contact.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate classes as assigned in the PLAY curriculum, by implementing effective teaching methods and giving equal attention to all participants.
  • Responsible for administering professional and effective class-specific skills according to PLAY curriculum description, and motivating class members to learn, progress, and develop.
  • Encourage and instruct class members by demonstrating age-appropriate proper form and techniques.
  • Set up and monitor any relevant class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to supervisor immediately.
  • Advise students on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  • Distribute handouts and/or class evaluations, if appropriate, and answer questions from students and/or teachers/administrators after each session.
  • Develop positive relationships with students, teachers, and administrators - and provide encouragement, support and guidance to support students in their healthy living goals.
  • Record number of participants per class for every class taught, and/or assist with student check-in for class according to their assigned school site policy.
  • Encourage student involvement
  • Respond promptly and courteously to all school and/or administrator inquiries/needs, and according to each specific school, and YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles rules and/or policies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities. Complete additional projects and reports as required.
  • Adherence and commitment to assigned hours and shifts, for the entire duration of the school-year. Assigned shifts are off-site, and PLAY coaches are responsible for their own transportation and arrival time.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  • Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

  • All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
