Position Description

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Youth Dance Instructor will provide guided instruction in the areas of ballet, hip-hop, tap and other styles of dance/movement for youth ages 3 to 14 years. This position requires you to have experience in teaching and leading children, and the ability to develop or implement classes that are age appropriate. In addition to individual class instruction, it is necessary to be able to lead class participants - and for the instructor to foster a positive class environment that is safe and fun.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Program Knowledge of age-appropriate motor development skills, proper and safe techniques for youth dancers
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience teaching dance to children.
  • Strong character values (respect, responsibility, honesty, caring); strong communication skills; emotional maturity
  • Must be available Monday & Wednesdays from 4:10 pm - 5:45 pm and Saturdays from 10:15 am - 12:00 pm

Responsibilities

  1. Create a welcoming environment by greeting children by name with a smile and eye contact.
  2. Create classes that are interactive, safe and age appropriate.
  3. Organize instructional space and clean instructional area after class.
  4. Preplan class sessions, which includes warm-up, technique/combination instruction and choreography, as well as preparing youth appropriate/family friendly music selections.
  5. Plan and lead youth dance classes, implementing effective teaching methods, giving equal attention to all participants.
  6. Responsible for administering professional and effective program-specific skills according to the course description and/or curriculum.
  7. Help children manage behavior using a positive approach, including redirection and using constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
  8. Interact, initiate and encourage the children in the activities during class.
  9. Address children who are not performing exercises/activities/techniques correctly by demonstrating proper form and techniques.
  10. Encourage member involvement with children, parents and/or school and identify potential volunteers.
  11. Respond promptly and courteously to all member inquiries/needs.
  12. Responsible for building small communities by facilitating connections with and between members (children and/or parents).
  13. Provide feedback to parents and/or school personnel regarding their child/children's participation and behavior in the program.
  14. Maintain close supervision of children at all times.  At no time will a child be left unsupervised.
  15. Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  16. Distribute handouts and/or class evaluations, if appropriate, and answer questions from participants after each session. 
  17. Take attendance and/or record number of participants per class for every class taught.
  18. Follow and enforce proper sign in/out procedures.
  19. Complete additional projects, reports, and child assessments as required.
  20. Set up and monitor class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to supervisor immediately.
  21. Maintain a professional image and work harmoniously with staff and members.
  22. Attend meetings and trainings as required.
