Position Description

The Specialty Program Instructor is responsible for development, supervision and leadership of the Youth Fitness classes that require instructors to have specialized background, training and/or experience.



The Instructor preferably has a background in playing guitar and ukulele instruments.  The Instructor must be knowledgeable in the use and maintenance of relevant equipment as well as the principles related to the type of instrument being taught.  The Instructor must have the ability to work and interact with a diverse group of people.



  1. Must hold current CPR and First Aid Certification.
  2. Attend all in-house instructor workshops and meetings.
  3. Complete the following mandatory trainings: Staff Orientation, Member Service Training, Child Abuse Prevention Workshop, YES Training, and YMCA's Principles of Health and Fitness Course.



  1. Volunteer / Staff Supervision & Development


  1. Warmly and enthusiastically greet members with a smile and eye contact. Be aware of member needs and make an effort to approach them before they approach you. Anticipate their needs.
  2. Personalize relationships with members by introducing yourself and asking the name of each member with whom you come into contact. Make a point of remembering member names and use them frequently. When the opportunity arises introduce members to other members or to fellow staff.               
  3. Understand and be able to discuss and promote all YMCA programs.
  4. Assure distribution of information to participants and reminding them of upcoming events.
  5. Liaison to Annual Support Campaign.
  6. Assist in recruiting a minimum of forty (40) campaigners for Youth Fitness/ Sports Division.
  7. Motivating volunteers and staff in reaching department goal.
  8. Be flexible and adaptable in order to accommodate member's needs.
  9. Be able to answer member's questions, concerns and complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
  10. Be able to effectively problem solve, taking full responsibility to remedy the situation and follow through to its completion.
  11. Always convey a positive attitude when interacting with members or in the presence of members. Negative comments of any kind are inappropriate. Personal frustrations should be discussed with the Youth Fitness Coordinator.
  12. Provide members with opportunities that will increase their involvement, sense of belonging and ownership of the YMCA.
  1. Program Management and Development


  1. Ensure the quality of all programs and activities in the Fitness Department.
  2. Responsible for the set-up and breakdown of all program equipment.
  3. Constantly build relationships with our members, thus modeling for other staff.
  4. Assist in developing new, fun, creative classes for members to enjoy.
  5. Implement Character Counts Program into all classes and activities.
  6. Distribute brochures and department information to staff and program participants.
  7. Keep all equipment in safe, operational condition. Perform a routine check of equipment and report damaged equipment to supervisor immediately. Regularly check all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness. Take responsibility to keep all work areas clean and organized.
  8. Be proactive regarding food or drink in the Gymnasium and HAC. Keep floor area clean of spills and dirt.



III. Administration  


  1. Take daily attendance and ensure the completion on program guidelines.
  2. Understand, abide by and enforce YMCA policies and procedures. Positively explain and interpret policies to members and staff.
  3. Contact members on the waiting list when space is available.
  4. Conduct program evaluations when assigned.
  5. Be familiar with emergency procedures. Respond promptly and appropriately.
  6. Abide by the safety and injury illness and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of your program participants.
  7. Appropriately fill out any accident or incident reports when necessary.



  1. Attendance


  1. Maintain good attendance. Give Youth Fitness Coordinator a two-week notice on expected absences or requested time off.
  2. Assume full responsibility for assigned shifts, completing change of shift forms when necessary.
  3. Arrive for assigned shift well-groomed and in proper uniform. Uniform required: Black / khaki pants or athletic shorts, staff t-shirt.
  4. Follow procedures when punching in/out for all shifts and scheduled breaks.




Youth Fitness Programs will be operated effectively and efficiently.  Members will receive complete satisfaction with our programs and will thoroughly enjoy their experience with the YMCA.
