POSITION SUMMARY

Our Youth Specialty Instructor (Lead Tumbling Instructor) will serve as our Lead Tumbling Instructor for our Youth Tumbling/Gymnastics classes. This position will lead the instruction as well as our staff in our Tumbling/Gymnastics youth program group classes ranging from beginner to intermediate level in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement. The most important pre-requisite, is the ability to help ensure an age-appropriate, safe, but also fun and high energy environment for kids, with classes that teach fundamental tumbling skills and movements. The Lead Tumbling Instructor is responsible for leading Youth Program classes that teach the specific skills affiliated with each particular course design, while maintaining the health and safety of each class participant. This position will require the ability to design and implement a 6-week curriculum, including daily lesson plans 2 times per week. All of our Tumbling instructors teach as part of a staff team of 2-3 instructors for classes of 10-15 students, and assist or lead teaching age-appropriate classes that develop basic tumbling skills in a fun environment, that are open to kids of any experience level. Classes emphasize fun, and development of skills over the course of each session. The Lead Tumbling Instructor must be comfortable leading large classes, mentoring and coaching staff, and passionate about coaching, motivating, and developing youth through tumbling and gymnastics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION: Must be 18 years or older. Bachelor's Degree in physical education, kinesiology, dance, or relatable movement based studies strongly preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: Current approved EMSA First Aid; Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications (8 hours). Completion of child abuse prevention training prior to first day in program.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values; communication skills; leadership; motivating others; high-energy; ability to connect with kids ages 3-14.
  • EXPERIENCE: 5+ years Tumbling/Gymnastics experience; 2+ years coaching or teaching experience Tumbling/Gymnastics to youth;
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: Experience with any of the following criteria will also be weighted in consideration of candidates: Cheer/Cheerleading; Dance; Group Exercise; Youth Sports coaching; 2+ years of experience working with youth ages 2-12 in any type of organized class setting preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Create an energetic and welcoming age-appropriate environment by greeting members by name with a smile and eye contact.
  2. Plan and lead age-appropriate program classes in assigned areas, such as Tumbling and Gymnastics by implementing effective teaching methods, giving equal attention to all participants.
  3. Responsible for administering professional and effective program-specific skills according to course description, and motivating class members to learn, progress, and develop.
  1. Encourage and instruct class members by demonstrating age-appropriate proper form and techniques.
  2. Set up and monitor any relevant class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to supervisor immediately.
  3. Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  4. Distribute handouts and/or class evaluations, if appropriate, and answer questions from participants after each session.
  5. Develop positive relationships with participants and provide encouragement, support and guidance to support members in their healthy living goals.
  6. Record number of participants per class for every class taught.
  7. Encourage member involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  8. Respond promptly and courteously to all member inquiries/needs.
  9. Perform other duties and responsibilities. Complete additional projects and reports as required.
  10. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  11. Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  12. Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
