Position Description

The Youth Dance Instructor is responsible for creating positive, nurturing relationships with children while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers, staff and partners. Duties include designing curriculum and lessons plans that will bring consistency and quality to our dance program. Current offerings include jazz, hip hop and tap.


  • Eighteen years or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least (1) year experience teaching dance or performing arts to children preferred.
  • Current approved EMSA First Aid; Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications (8 hours). Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training prior to first day in program.
  • Strong character values; strong communication skills; emotional maturity  


  1. Create a welcoming environment by greeting children by name with a smile and eye contact.
  2. Preplan and lead class sessions, implementing effective teaching methods, giving equal attention to all participants.
  3. Responsible for administering professional and effective program-specific skills according to course description and/or curriculum.
  4. Planning and implementing classes based on a specific skill mastery, culminating in an exposition/showcase at the end of the session.
  5. Interact, initiate and encourage the children in the activities during class.
  6. Address children who are not performing exercises/activities correctly by demonstrating proper form and techniques.
  7. Encourage member involvement with children, parents and identify potential volunteers.
  8. Respond promptly and courteously to all member inquiries/needs.
  9. Maintain close supervision of children at all times.  At no time will a child be left unsupervised.
  10. Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  11. Take attendance and/or record number of participants per class for every class taught.
  12. Follow and enforce proper sign in/out procedures.
  13. Set up and monitor class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to supervisor immediately.
  14. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  15. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
