Position Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Counselor, Distance Learning Program, within a school-age distance learning support program, develops positive, nurturing relationships with children while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience. Provides support for the children as they attend school virtually and lead both child-led and staff-led supervised enrichment and recreational activities outside of school time. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. This position has been created by the YMCA in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This position provides support for school-age children who, due to the pandemic, cannot attend school, in person. This position is temporary and is subject to end at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eighteen years or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working in school-age children in a child care, afterschool, enrichment or day camp setting.
  • Strong character values (respect, responsibility, honesty, caring); strong communication skills; emotional maturity
  • Current First Aid, Adult, Infant and Child CPR Certifications. TB Test.

Responsibilities

  1. Support children with logging in to technology, ensuring children are attentive and engaged in their online classes, providing support and assistance to help them complete schoolwork and homework, managing their daily class schedule and leading enrichment and recreation activities, during out-of-school time, etc., if applicable.
  2. Managing a Primary Care Group (PCG) of up to 12 children.
  3. Managing the program environment; maintain all health orders related to COVID-19: physical distancing, face coverings, hand washing breaks, sanitizing and disinfecting, limiting shared equipment, visual health assessments, etc.
  4. Implements a high-quality program. Ensures high-quality programs through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families, with a focus on homework and schoolwork support, enrichment, recreation and supervised child-led and/or staff-led activities.
  5. Full understanding of federal, state, county and local Public Health regulations as it relates to providing school-age programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Responsible for ensuring program operates in full compliance with regulations at all times.
  6. Develops positive relations with community as a representative of the YMCA.
  7. Ensures close visual supervision of children, following ratios based on specific program. No child is left unsupervised at any time. No YMCA staff person is left alone with one single child, at any time.
    • (1) Distance Learning Program Counselor for every Primary Care Group (PCG) of up to a maximum of 12 children.
  8. Help children manage behavior using a positive approach, including proactive strategies, redirection and using constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
  9. Actively supports and is committed to inclusion and compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), where appropriate.
  10. Support planning and implementing program curriculum and activities that are focused on enrichment, recreation and child-led, staff-led activities, that are developmentally appropriate, consistent with the YMCA values and established guidelines, and within the guidelines of the YMCA's program standards and the current health orders related to COVID-19.
  11. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards, maintains site and equipment, and maintains required program records in accordance with federal, state, county and local Public Health regulations, funding terms and conditions (if applicable), and YMCA expectations.
  12. Ensures completion of all administrative paperwork, as assigned.
  13. Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child. Communicates with Program Director regarding child's development.
  14. Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents.
  15. Attends and participates in family events, program activities, staff meetings and trainings, as assigned.
  16. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies. Follows reporting procedures and proactively responds to situations to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
  17. Understands and complies with current federal, state, county, local regulations, YMCA policies and procedures at all times.
  18. Maintains positive relationship with parents, other YMCA team members and community partners. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  19. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
