Position Description

The Program Director is responsible for the development and operation of all YMCA branch programs, member support and engagement, program growth and retention, fiscal management, volunteer and staff development. This role will assist with the implementation of policies, procedures, and standards established by the Metropolitan Board of Directors, the Administration, and the YMCA Branch Board of Managers. Serves as a member of the YMCA branch and Metropolitan Los Angeles staff team.


  • High School Diploma; Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Strong character values; excellent communication skills; strong computer skills and a thorough knowledge of M/S Office
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience


  1. Ensure a welcoming environment in assigned YMCA Program.
  2. Develop, implement and achieve enrollment goals identified in Branch Annual Operating Plan.
  3. Oversee and conduct ongoing program member evaluations and surveys to ensure that high levels of quality in programs are maintained at all times; ensure outcomes align with the needs of the community and the branch strategic plan.
  4. Set an example for all staff by greeting members by name and taking the initiative to talk to members.
  5. Ensure that all facilities, program areas and equipment are clean and in proper working order.
  6. Recruit, hire and train supervising and program staff in areas of responsibility by:
    • using screening tools
    • conducting panel interviews
    • executing reference checks
  1. Ensure that all new employees are fully onboarded by following the hire checklist requirements which include:
    • New Employee Orientation
    • Compliance trainings (Child Abuse Prevention and Workplace Harassment Prevention)
    • Safety Orientation
  1. Provide direct supervision to department staff, assuring that all staff are qualified, certified, and are meeting minimum performance standards for their position.
  2. Provide training for staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis through staff meetings, special courses and workshops.
  3. Assist with developing annual operating budget for assigned program.
  4. Manage department budget to achieve monthly, quarterly and annual goals.
  5. Maintain systems for variance analysis, revenue and expense monitoring and control.
  6. Oversee and support special programs, such as FEED LA, while providing guidance to staff and volunteers.
  7. Development and management of sports programs which include but are not limited to basketball, tennis, golf and soccer.
  8. Oversee and provide guidance in the After School Tutoring program.
  9. Provide on-going leadership, professional guidance, and development to staff.
  10. Identify program volunteer positions and assist with the recruitment and tracking of program volunteers
  11. Responsible of overseeing volunteer participants, ensuring they meet minimum requirements:
    • Registration using volunteer platform (VolunteerMatters)
    • Maintain current live scan on file
    • Complete all required compliance trainings
  1. Successfully lead and supervise Youth and Government programming
  2. Supervise and provide support to Group Exercise instructors.
  3. Oversee and assist in managing staff/volunteers for special events (YWCA Internship, School Daze/Cozy Coat Events, Crenshaw Holiday Spectacular and other special events).
  4. Develop and manage employee scheduled by adhering to the time keeping policy.
    • Regular schedule employees
    • Audits and approves worked schedules
    • Address time keeping issues prior closing of each pay period
  1. Ensure appropriate staff coverage in all assigned programs and services. Fill in as needed.
  2. Assist the branch management team in maintaining high staff morale, high staff retention, and positive results from the annual staff satisfaction survey.
  3. Support a year-round fund-raising program that includes the Annual Support Campaign, special events and President's Club; Responsible for Annual Support Campaign leadership including team captains, division manager and/or team members.
  4. Develop annual marketing plan including mailings, advertisement and community outreach.
  5. Serve as a staff officer to assigned committee that reports to the Board of Mangers; Ensure committee has a commission statement and chart of work that is aligned with the branch strategic plan.
  6. Create opportunities (events, initiatives, activities) for members to develop small communities within the YMCA.
  7. Ensure all staff members are up-to-date with all programs offered at the YMCA in order to market to all program members
  8. Communicate program information, registration information, schedules, etc., effectively and consistently with branch management and membership staff. Update program brochures and fliers to ensure strong communication throughout the branch.
