SUMMARY

To further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of a programs that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers' ages and abilities.

Under the guidance of the Branch Executive and/ or Senior Program Director, Seasonal Program Directors are responsible for the organization, delivery and quality of YMCA camping services summer resident camp programs, program participants and community. This position works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • AGE: Minimum age of 25.
  • Education - Bachelor's degree from a four-year College or university in recreational management, physical education, or related field or two to three years related experience.
  • CERTIFICATIONS - Current certification in first aid and CPR (or willing to obtain during employment).
  • Language Skills - ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodically, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Reasoning Ability - ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situation where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Driving - California Class C or B with Passenger/ Airbrakes Endorsement, current 10 year clean driving record

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

All program directors are expected to perform the following activities. Duties specific to the program area follow and other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Directly supervises part time and non-exempt employees and volunteers.
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
    • trains, and develops non-exempt and part time program staff and volunteers
    • Plans, assigns, and directs staff and volunteer work.
    • Conducts performance appraisals, rewards and discipline
    • Monitors and updates all required staff certifications
    • Addresses complaints and resolves problems
    • Promotes and incorporates the YMCA five core values and character development model in to all program activities
    • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
    • Organizes and schedules program registrations.
    • Compiles program statistics.
    • Monitor and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
    • Coordinates use of branch facilities for program activities and events
    • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
    • Organizes and schedules staff meetings.
    • Reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Plays an active role in continuing to identify ways to improve safety standards.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  • Uses problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Assist in the planning of any special events.
  • Assist in the day to day upholding of camp and dining hall procedures
  • Assist in maintaining housekeeping standards and assigned duties
  • Assist in the duties such as night patrol, kitchen patrol or office help
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  • Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

  • All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds.

This position requires staff to live on site during Camp Host duties and employer will provide dorm style housing.

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.
  • Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat.
