The Opportunity:


The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles is an experienced and enthusiastic visionary leader, setting and executing a strategic vision that is responsive to the communities of Los Angeles. The ideal candidate will inspire and lead, build upon and strengthen, and rebuild and reinvigorate.

Inspire and Lead

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles has successfully adapted to the changing needs of the Los Angeles community during the pandemic through strategic partnerships, unity amongst staff and Board, and historic fundraising efforts.

The CEO will be a visionary with a demonstrated history of forming partnerships, creating unity with branches and Metro and leading successfully in challenging times. He or she will champion and position the YMCA as a valuable partner in Los Angeles, implementing strategies to deliver on our Mission with greater impact for our community. This position requires a decisive leader who will work effectively with staff, the Board, community and local government leaders, members, donors, and volunteers to continue to position the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles as a community leader.

This position requires experience leading well-established teams and the skill sets and expertise to successfully navigate a multi-site, multi-program, complex organization through these pandemic-impacted times and beyond.

The CEO should be readily capable of becoming a recognized and visible leader in the community as well, highly knowledgeable about its opportunities, challenges, needs and resources and have (or be able to develop) a broad knowledge of the YMCA locally, nationally and globally.

Build Upon and Strengthen

Membership was at historic highs pre-COVID and fundraising hit its peak during COVID. This position will build upon the successes of the last five years and build upon them by executing on the strategic priorities set by the Board and staff. In order to accomplish this, the position requires an inspiring leader who has not only been part of strategic planning, but executed upon strategic plans with overwhelming success.

Additionally, the position requires someone who has the experience or can quickly build incredible relationships throughout Los Angeles to advance fundraising and partnership objectives.

Rebuild and Reinvigorate

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles experienced numerous challenges during the pandemic including compassion fatigue and membership and program enrollment drop-offs. This position requires a leader who can reinvigorate a tired workforce who have been faced with having to do more with less because of the financial impact of the pandemic. In addition, this leader will need a proven business acumen to rebuild the membership and programmatic operations, ensuring high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs.

The ideal candidate will be a leader who is able to adapt and pivot to new community demands and programming opportunities. The leader will have experience in successful leadership through crises (specifically to assist in recovery from the COVID crisis) including successful navigation through downsizing and restructuring and the ability to act urgently.

Lastly, the CEO will be responsible for implementing the financial plan to build reserves and restore fiscal stability.


Expected Criteria for Candidates:


  • Bachelor's degree; related graduate degree preferred.

  • Strong preference for ten years prior experience in a senior leadership role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable, complex organization with direct supervision of C-Suite staff and multiple levels of employees. Experience must include strategic planning, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development (including annual campaigns and securing grants) and supervision of multi-site operations.

  • A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $30M or more annually; past success and experience raising significant contributed dollars.

  • Demonstrated track record of having developed new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.

  • Leadership qualities that encourage and create a supportive environment for critical and creative thinking. Demonstrated success of teams and individuals under their leadership.

  • Experienced in leading and/or executing Strategic Planning, i.e., development, implementation, and measurement.

  • Fundraising experience including annual campaigns, capital campaigns, endowment development, and the securing of grants.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:


  1. Earned YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. This national charter requirement can be attained within the first three years of employment.
  2. Experience partnering and working with volunteer community leaders on boards and committees.
  3. Ability to speak any language in addition to English is a plus.
  4. A proven track record of Government grants acquisition and compliance experience.

Salary Range: Compensation will be competitive, reflective of market data and commensurate with experience.


Residency Expectation: The CEO will reside within Southern California, preferably Los Angeles County.
